The B.W.O.
The BWO is the political representative body for the offshore wind industry in Germany. We pool the professional expertise of companies along the entire value chain, from manufacturers and developers to operators and service providers in the offshore wind energy sector. The BWO is committed to advocating for the political, regulatory, and economic interests of the industry. conditions for the expansion of offshore wind energy in line with the energy transition structuresThe BWO is the central point of contact for political actors at the state and federal levels on all matters relating to offshore wind energy. The BWO evaluates current developments and analyzes the consequences of future regulatory frameworks.
July 2020
The Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV (BWO) has submitted a statement to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) on the preliminary draft of the 2020 area development plan for the German North and Baltic Seas.
Water depth and distance to coast
The limited area potential means that further expansion is increasingly taking place further away from the coast and thus also in greater water depths.
System configuration from OWP
Newer systems are higher and more powerful. This enables a higher wind yield and increases the security of supply in Europe.
Distribution of the OWF to the federal states and the North or Baltic Sea
The graphic shows the distribution of offshore wind farms across the federal states and the North and Baltic Seas. Clearly to be seen: Most of the buildings are built in the North Sea.
Offshore wind energy expansion
The graphic shows the expansion of offshore wind energy from 2008 to 2020. The slump in the expansion of offshore wind energy is striking. This slump is also known as a thread break and can be traced back to wrong decisions when converting the financing regime to auctions.
Despite the expansion gap — offshore wind industry in Germany with positive future prospects
"Especially in light of the low expansion, we welcome the fact that the anchoring of 20 GW offshore wind energy by 2030 and 40 GW by 2040 will now create long-term planning security. With the increased expansion targets, offshore wind energy strengthens climate protection and creates economic development, ”comment the industry organizations BWE, BWO, VDMA, WAB and the OFFSHORE WINDENERGIE foundation on the offshore expansion figures published today by Deutsche WindGuard.

BWO welcomes the EU Commission's integral energy concept
"Thinking all sectors together and developing a new, innovative, integrated energy concept - from our point of view that is the right way to go," explains Stefan Thimm, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV (BWO). The use of hydrogen in parts of the economy that cannot be directly electrified is an elementary component in achieving the climate goals.
BWO managing director comments on NSEC ministerial meeting
“At today's ministerial meeting of the North Sea Energy Cooperation (NSEC), the key role of offshore wind energy in achieving the climate goals was correctly recognized. The next step is now to pour the agreed points for the implementation of cross-border projects into a specific regulatory framework as quickly as possible, "says Stefan Thimm, Managing Director of the BWO.
