BWO welcomes the EU Commission's integral energy concept

Offshore wind and hydrogen play a key role
July 8, 2020

"Thinking all sectors together and developing a new, innovative, integrated energy concept - from our point of view that is the right way to go," explains Stefan Thimm, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV (BWO). The use of hydrogen in parts of the economy that cannot be directly electrified is an elementary component in achieving the climate goals.

“Offshore wind energy is particularly well suited for hydrogen production due to its high full load hours and the relatively uniform feed-in profile. It will therefore play a key role at both national and international level, ”explains Thimm. "I am confident that large quantities of hydrogen will soon be produced from offshore wind energy and thus contribute to the decarbonization of Europe by 2050."

The leading international role of Europe must be strengthened in the long term. For this, on the one hand, a reliable regulatory framework and, on the other hand, the corresponding infrastructure are necessary. For a rapid market ramp-up for green hydrogen, it is also important to promote pilot and research projects in this area and to develop a European standard for the certification of green hydrogen.

The EU strategy for an integrated energy system and the EU hydrogen strategy were presented today by EU Commission President Frans Timmermans and EU Commissioner Kadri Simson.
