Secure energy production at sea!

23. February 2024

Statements on the Parliamentary Evening “Energy Security: How do we secure the offshore infrastructure?”

“Protecting offshore wind energy is a security issue. With the expansion targets of 70 GW to be fed into the German power grid by 2045 and 300 GW to be fed into the European power grid, this technology is playing an increasingly important role in the energy supply of Germany and Europe.

We have brought together experts from business, science and politics to pool voices from the industry and draw attention to deficits and the need for action. I am pleased that we will continue this dialogue with partners such as the United Kingdom,” says BWO Managing Director Stefan Thimm.

“The UK shares the same vision with our partners in Germany: to make the North Sea the green energy center of Europe. And our contribution to this vision is enormous – with 77 GW in the pipeline, the UK will contribute almost a third of the future energy hub. “Our event yesterday showed once again how important it is to protect our critical offshore wind infrastructure and to work closely with our partners,” added Kathryn Boyd, Country Director Trade Germany and Deputy Trade Commissioner for Europe, at the UK Department for Business and Trade, British Embassy Berlin.

Positions of the BWO

1. The state should take responsibility.
– In an emergency, state security forces are required
– The industry provides support, for example by reporting sightings of unknown ships during maintenance work

2. Comprehensive situational awareness of the maritime area – including under water
– The Maritime Security Center (MSZ) should be strengthened
– Federal police, navy, water police and the accident command should coordinate more closely

3. Act quickly in an emergency
– Time-critical situations should be prepared and practiced
– Avoid wasting time

4. Strengthening the federal police
– The federal police need equipment
– You should train for emergencies together with operators and authorities
