EU requirements for the expansion of offshore wind energy

March 14, 2024

At the first “BWO Expertise” event Chatham Partners law firm provided an overview of energy-relevant standards that the EU has adopted in recent months for the expansion of offshore wind energy.

The aim of this BWO expertise was to obtain assessments of which decisions the German legislature must make for offshore expansion. What scope for decision-making remains or opens up?

In their contributions, the experts Marieke Lüdecke, Felix Fischer and Thomas Hinrichsen from Chatham Partners briefly discussed the genesis of EU legislation since the Treaty of Lisbon, through the Treaty of Paris to current developments in RED III. What impact will this European dynamic have on the rules in Germany?

Conclusion of the discussion round

There are fixed specifications, but with a wide scope for design. The priority for EU lawmakers is also to secure the expansion goals.

However, the German legislature is required to implement the premises of the EU Commission in the spirit of the European Green Deal.
