Think about system integration – ensure security of supply

16 May 2022

“Our entire electricity system will change drastically over the next few years. There will then no longer be many reserves that we can fall back on today. And that's good. Because every switched-off conventional power plant brings us to our common goal of CO2-One step closer to neutrality.

The current WindSeeG amendment now offers the opportunity to think about the system integration of the electricity produced offshore at an early stage. The Federal Government should not let this opportunity pass. We therefore propose that in future the system integration of electricity from offshore wind farms should be stimulated by means of an additional tendering criterion. If additional grid and system-supporting systems are already taken into account in the tender - such as battery storage, electrolysers or flexible loads - then the proportion of electricity used from renewable energies can be increased, grid congestion costs reduced and dependence on imports of fossil fuels reduced.

If the uncapped bid component were to remain, it would not only result in immense additional costs for the industry. In the medium term, the money used for this would not be available for system integration.”
