Statement: Electricity market plans of the European Commission

March 14, 2023

The EU Commission presented its proposals for the electricity market today. The measures contained therein secure the expansion of renewable energies and strengthen market instruments such as bilateral contracts for difference and power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Stephen Thimm underlines: "In particular, the legal clarification for bilateral contracts for difference and for PPAs will help to promote investments in renewable energies and at the same time reduce the risk for project developers and electricity consumers".

The EU Commission's initiative to provide the member states with tools to deal with payment defaults on the customer side and to stimulate the use of PPAs is also positive.

The measures taken by the EU Commission support the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy system and at the same time strengthen the competitiveness of the electricity market in Europe.
