Offshore wind energy must become a central component of the federal hydrogen strategy

BWO comments on the stakeholder conference on the national hydrogen strategy in Berlin.
5 November 2019

At the invitation of BMWi, BMVI, BMBF and BMZ, a stakeholder conference on the national hydrogen strategy is taking place in Berlin today. The BWO welcomes the initiative of the federal government to make the use of hydrogen a central component of climate, energy and industrial policy.

"The operators of offshore wind farms see great potential in the use of hydrogen for the further decarbonization of our society," says Uwe Knickrehm, managing director of the operator association BWO, "It is important, however, that the hydrogen is really green, i.e. from electricity from renewable sources is won."

In the future, the chemical and steel industries, for example, will need large amounts of hydrogen. Demand is also emerging in mobility and in the area of network stability. With its high number of full-load hours, offshore wind energy offers the best conditions for the downstream production of green hydrogen. The federal government should therefore integrate offshore wind energy into its hydrogen strategy and accelerate its expansion in addition to the 20 GW that will be connected to the German power grid by 2030. In doing so, they should note that electricity for hydrogen generation must become cheaper. The first thing to do is to reduce taxes and surcharges. Electrolysers, for example, should be exempt from the EEG surcharge if they consume 100% renewable electricity.
