More hydrogen for Germany

BWO eV welcomes the decision of the National Hydrogen Strategy
June 10, 2020

"We expressly welcome the fact that offshore wind energy plays a special role in the National Hydrogen Strategy", commented the Managing Director of the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV, Stefan Thimm, on the National Hydrogen Strategy adopted today in the Federal Cabinet. “With its high full load hours, offshore wind energy is ideally suited for the production of green hydrogen and can thus make another decisive contribution to the decarbonization of Germany. It is important, however, that the capacity planned for the generation of green hydrogen is put out to tender in addition to the 20 GW offshore wind energy that has already been decided. Otherwise we didn't win anything in the end, ”explains Thimm.

The fact that € 7 billion in funding will be made available for hydrogen technologies is also good news. “Creating incentives for the market ramp-up of hydrogen technologies in Germany and thus laying the foundation for a strong home market is the right way from our point of view,” said Thimm. The same applies to the approach of expanding European cooperation - especially with the countries bordering the North Sea. It should be noted that the regulatory framework for grid connection and tendering for such “international” wind farms are currently still unclear. "As an industry, we are happy to offer the federal government our support with the specific design of the relevant regulations," says Thimm.
