BWO welcomes energy policy decisions by the Bundestag

June 24, 2021

In all likelihood, with the amendment to the Energy Industry Act and the Climate Protection Act and other energy policy projects, the Bundestag will set the course for the future expansion of offshore wind energy. "With today's resolutions, urgently necessary prerequisites for raising additional expansion potential and accelerating the expansion of the offshore grid are created," says BWO managing director Stefan Thimm.

A decisive innovation is that the amendment to the Energy Industry Act (EnWG) will enable approved projects in the territorial sea to be connected to the onshore power grid in the future. So far, this has only been possible for projects without a permit. The EnWG also provides, for example, to bring forward the commissioning of the offshore connection line if the completion date cannot otherwise be guaranteed.

In addition, the immediate climate protection program decided by the Federal Cabinet yesterday takes into account, among other things, the promotion of hydrogen production at sea and the resolutions of the Bundestag today the necessary framework for the EEG surcharge exemption for green electricity in hydrogen production. Stefan Thimm: “To make green hydrogen economical, we need a coherent overall package. We see two good approaches here. "

It is questionable, however, whether the energy and climate package is sufficient to achieve the reduction paths from the Climate Protection Act. “We see an enormous need for additional amounts of green electricity - in addition to direct electrification, there is now also hydrogen generation to decarbonise industry. There is still a lot to do here for the next federal government, ”said Thimm.
