Fire protection standard for offshore wind energy

Berlin / Essen, December 7, 2021. A fire protection standard for offshore wind energy is common Development goal of a cooperation between the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore (BWO) and vgbe energy *. The binding standard is intended to ensure the safety of people, the environment and infrastructure in the offshore wind industry in the long term and reduce the effort and costs involved in planning, building and operating offshore wind turbines.

For this purpose, vgbe energy brings with it important empirical values from the creation and application of various other standards - including a fire protection standard for onshore wind energy. The BWO complements this with its extensive operational expertise. In addition to the cooperation partners, system manufacturers and the relevant authorities will be involved in the development of this standard. The interdisciplinary working group has started work; the completion of the common standard is planned for the end of 2023.

Particularly against the background of the ambitious expansion goals of the traffic light coalition and the new federal government, harmonization of the statutory fire protection requirements for offshore wind turbines is essential. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) also expressly welcomes the project and is involved in an advisory capacity.

* vgbe energy has been the new brand identity of VGB PowerTech since September 2021.
