Connection to territorial sea could mitigate offshore expansion problems

20 April 2021

“The proposal to facilitate the grid connection of areas in the territorial sea is a step in the right direction. The regulation can help to raise additional potential for offshore wind energy and to alleviate the consequences of the current expansion gap for the companies and their approximately 24.000 employees. "(Stefan Thimm, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV)

Hintergrund: According to press reports, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is planning further changes to the amendment to the Energy Industry Act (EnWG) passed at the beginning of February. A regulation is to be included that is intended to facilitate the connection of areas for offshore wind energy in the coastal area. According to the BMWi, the regulation will enable the grid connection of already approved projects in the territorial sea to be allocated.
