Second North Sea Summit in Ostend

26 April 2023

Yesterday the second North Sea Summit took place in Ostend, Belgium. In addition to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the heads of government of Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Norway as well as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also attended the second North Sea Summit.

"It is good that the heads of state and government have made offshore expansion a top priority and are now discussing the challenges for offshore expansion in the North Sea for the second time, because the challenges are largely the same in our countries and should be discussed together be addressed" says BWO Managing Director Stephen Thimm.

The aim of yesterday's meeting was to make the North Sea the largest producer of renewable energies by 2050 and to decisively advance the green transformation through the use of hydrogen and offshore wind energy.

“In order to achieve the statutory expansion targets, the European offshore wind industry must be expanded quickly. In a joint statement that we co-signed, we call for more support in setting up and expanding production capacities in order to prevent supply bottlenecks. This not only affects the supply chain, but also ports and shipyards on the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts Stephen Thimm.

The jointly formulated claim sends an important signal and expresses the will and political efforts towards a secure, energy-independent and climate-neutral Europe.

In the coming days, the exact implementation of these plans will be discussed in numerous industry talks at the WindEurope conference in Copenhagen.

Hintergrund:

Last May, Germany, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands formed the “North Sea Coalition” at the North Sea Summit in Esbjerg, Denmark. The four founding members have thus committed to expanding the joint generation of electricity from offshore wind energy to 2050 GW by 150, thus ensuring a reduction in dependence on gas and fossil fuels.
