Policymakers promissing 20 GW in 2030

Thomas Bareiß: More offshore expansion possible - BWO with a proposal for further steps
June 13, 2019

The parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics, Thomas Bareiß, announced an increase in the expansion of offshore wind energy at the renewable energy summit of the think tank Aurora Energy Research in Berlin. The BWO expressly welcomes this announcement. The offshore wind industry has long called for the expansion target to be adjusted to at least 20 GW by 2030 and 35 GW by 2035.
From the BWO's perspective, offshore wind energy can make a greater contribution than before to the progress of the energy transition in Germany. “The potential for offshore is enormous,” says Catrin Jung, CEO of BWO e.V., “the wind on the sea is blowing steadily and costs have fallen rapidly in recent years. The government is well advised to act now so that the potential can be tapped as quickly as possible.”
Of course, the further development of the onshore grid also plays a decisive role in the expansion of all types of renewable generation. A new network study commissioned by the offshore industry associations shows that the networks are able to transport more renewable electricity through short-term measures. Here too, action must be taken quickly.
In order to implement the newly defined expansion target to 20 GW by 2030, the BWO proposes setting up a large stakeholder group. This was supposed to bring together the BMWi, the BMVI, the BSH, the BNetzA, the transmission system operators, the responsible authorities of the northern countries, the offshore wind industry and large electricity customers from other industries. This would be the optimal approach to develop ways to develop the offshore potential for the energy transition.
