Multi-Use Wind Power – Collaboration of Renewable Energies Offshore as a Possible Game Changer

25 January 2023

Interesting exchange with the partners of the EU Scores project on innovative possibilities in offshore wind farms to operate not only wind turbines but also photovoltaics and wave energy. “Co-use can be more than fishing, research or defence. The first multi-use offshore wind farms are already being built in the Netherlands, in which various renewable energies ideally complement each other in order to increase space efficiency. In order to make this possible in Germany as well, a tendering system with qualitative criteria would be required. The uncapped bid component reduces the variety of players in the offshore wind industry and thus also stands in the way of innovative concepts such as those in the Netherlands," emphasizes BWO Managing Director Stefan Thimm. “Cooperation at this level could drive the energy transition at sea even faster. We remain in contact with the relevant stakeholders and are happy to take part in further consultations on the subject,” Thimm makes clear.
