European offshore boom and German standstill

WindEurope report: European countries are investing a record amount of over 26 billion euros in offshore wind energy. Germany must not lose touch!
8. February 2021

“With their investments in the offshore wind industry, the European countries are providing the right incentives and are thus making a decisive contribution to achieving the EU target of 300 GW by 2050. The record investment of around € 26 billion last year is a sign of the joint departure into a green, European energy and economic system. The current expansion figures in the German North and Baltic Seas are unfortunately in a sad contrast to this sum and are on the lowest level in the last 10 years. German politics should take this as an opportunity to find short-term potential in this country in order to overcome the current stalemate in national expansion. With regard to the financing model, too, many European countries are using the system of "Contract for Differences" ahead. If German politicians do not act accordingly, the domestic industry will not be able to participate in the European offshore awakening. This not only endangers jobs in the long term, but ultimately also the national expansion targets and climate protection. ”(Stefan Thimm, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV)

WindEurope, the European umbrella organization for the sector, today published the expansion and investment figures for European countries in the offshore wind industry. A total of 26,3 GW of newly installed wind energy at sea will be financed with the record sum of € 7,1 billion. France alone is planning to expand GW by 2023. Other European countries are also planning extensive projects. The adoption of the “Offshore Renewable Energy Strategy” (ORES) of the EU last year laid the necessary political framework for the European expansion of wind energy at sea.
