BWO: Bid component counteracts cost-efficient energy transition

6 April 2022

"With today's energy law decisions, the energy transition is finally picking up speed again. In addition to many good and important new regulations - such as increased expansion targets and a whole series of acceleration measures for offshore expansion - we still see weaknesses in the tender design for future offshore wind projects in particular.

The proposed bid component is 'dumb money' that is urgently needed elsewhere for diversifying supply risks and for system integration of renewable electricity - an idea that eliminates the capital costs of financing offshore wind farms and thus the electricity price for renewable energy pushes up. In my view, this is not compatible with the desire for a quick and cost-efficient energy transition.”

The draft amendments to the Offshore Wind Energy Act (WindSeeG) and the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) presented by Federal Minister of Economics Habeck were approved today in the federal cabinet and will now be referred to the Bundestag for parliamentary consideration.

As part of the association consultation, the BWO issued a statement on the draft of the WindSeeG in mid-March. In addition to the auction design, topics such as grid connection, implementation deadlines and dismantling are also addressed here.
