Thimm: Belgium should use the chairmanship of the North Sea cooperation for further initiatives

14 December 2020

“With the idea of an“ EU Enabling Framework ”for hybrid offshore wind projects, Germany has already given the first important impetus this year. Belgium should now use the chairmanship of the North Sea Energy Cooperation to replace the European patchwork of national special rules for offshore wind projects with a reliable and uniform regulatory framework.

Especially in light of the new EU climate targets, the pace needs to be increased urgently. The new EU Offshore Renewable Energy Strategy (ORES) also contains many questions relating to marine spatial planning, with an increased focus on the possible co-use of available sea space, the financing of offshore wind projects and the sharing of costs and benefits of cross-border projects the EU Commission remained unanswered. We have to work together now. "
(Stefan Thimm, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV)

As part of today's video conference of EU energy ministers, Germany handed over the chairmanship of the North Sea energy cooperation to Belgium. You can find the press release of the BMWi here.
