Protecting offshore wind energy is a safety issue

The security of Germany and the NATO states must also be guaranteed in the offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea. The incident of the sighting of a Russian military aircraft shortly off the island of Rügen shows how important it is to secure the energy supply at sea, even against physical attacks.

“Offshore wind energy is not only systemically important for the functioning of the German and European economy. It is also safety-relevant. The protection of critical maritime infrastructure above and below water is of crucial importance,” says BWO Managing Director Stefan Thimm out.

The offshore wind energy industry would like to be able to react quickly in the event of an incident, for example through scenario exercises in collaboration with the responsible authorities.

“The geopolitical situation has changed since Russia attacked Ukraine. If the worst comes to the worst, we must be prepared to react quickly together in a coordinated manner in order to be able to guarantee the energy supply. “We welcome a central reporting point at the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, as provided for in the draft of the Kritis-Dach Act,” said Thimm.

The BWO organizes in Cooperation with the British Embassy on February 22, 2024 a parliamentary evening on the topic “Energy security – How do we secure offshore infrastructure?”
