Offshore wind power shouldn't wait for the grid to be expanded - but it needs it too!
BWO reacts to Stephan Weil.
On the occasion of the demand for more offshore wind power from Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil in the Berliner Tagesspiegel, the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV (BWO) explains on the subject of grid expansion and offshore wind power:
The increase in the expansion target to 20GW offshore wind power by 2030, which can also be found in the draft bill of the coal exit law, strengthens the offshore wind energy industry and is an important step towards more climate protection. The prerequisite for this, according to the will of the federal government, should include steady progress in expanding the network towards the south.
As the federal association of all operators of offshore wind farms, the BWO supports the statement by Prime Minister Stephan Weil that offshore expansion should not be made solely dependent on problems in grid expansion. The production of green hydrogen from nearby offshore wind farms is also possible and entry into this technology is necessary.
The BWO therefore expects clear stipulations in the Federal Government's hydrogen strategy to apply. However, this cannot be at the expense of the ambitions for the necessary network expansion. “We still see 'Electricity First' as one of the main points of orientation of the energy transition”, says Uwe Knickrehm, Managing Director of BWO.
