“Offshore wind energy: 20 GW in 2030, feasable! – And how?"

Online event of the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore eV (BWO)

“The adoption of the WindSeeG is an important signal. However, we see the tender modalities as more than critical and also as a hurdle to achieving the goals,” opened the BWO board chairwoman, Catrin Jung, the BWO event on Monday afternoon. This was followed by a discussion with the Lower Saxony Minister for the Environment, Energy, Building and Climate Protection Olaf Lies (SPD) as well as Christian Dahlke, head of department in the Ministry of Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalization Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and around 70 participants.

"From an offshore perspective, 2030 is tomorrow - so we have to implement it quickly," explained Olaf Lies. “In my opinion, contracts for difference are a smart model for mediating between different interests. The introduction of a second bid component as proposed by the Federal Ministry of Economics would be a unique system in Europe. It's never politically wise. If there are still legal hurdles, we should definitely check it again. "Christian Dahlke agreed:" It often seems to me as if you were always on the high seas as a lawyer and offshore. Much is uncertain and not everything is known how it should work. But if other European countries rely on contracts for differences, then we in Germany shouldn't take a special route. "

In addition, large amounts of renewable energies are necessary to decarbonise industrial processes in Germany and offshore wind energy plays a central role due to the large generation capacities. "From my point of view, we as the North are currently taking responsibility for climate protection with offshore wind and hydrogen," says Lies. The political representatives of the coastal states also agreed on this issue. “From our point of view, it is also about making better use of our own potential in Germany, which is why it is also good that the latest drafts of the national hydrogen strategy take more account of offshore wind energy. The north with its proximity to the port can play an important role here, ”said Dahlke.
