Agreement on the wind energy at sea act

Stefan Thimm, BWO managing director, welcomes the agreement of the coalition of SPD, CDU and CSU on the amendment of the wind-at-sea law.
2 November 2020

“Today's agreement at WindSeeG is a big step in the right direction. The law sets the course for the further expansion of offshore wind energy. The new expansion targets (20 GW for 2030 and 40 GW for 2040) give the industry the necessary planning perspective and ensure that offshore wind energy can become a key pillar of the energy transition.

It is positive that the so-called second bid component is initially off the table. This would have led to increasing investment and implementation risks in new offshore projects and put the achievement of climate protection goals at risk. In addition, electricity generation costs would be unnecessarily increased and consumers would be burdened. Unfortunately, the introduction of contracts for difference (CfD) is also not planned, so that if there are several 0-cent bids, the lot has to decide. However, we understand that there is still a need for discussion and we welcome the fact that an evaluation should now take place before a decision is made on the future financial framework for offshore wind energy. We will gladly and constructively support this evaluation with our expertise and the know-how of our industry. "
