BWO statement on the “New Energy Agenda for Germany” of the CDU/CSU
Berlin, November 5, 2024. Stefan Thimm, BWO Managing Director, explains the CDU/CSU position paper “New Energy Agenda for Germany”:
"We are grateful that the Union is addressing the current challenges of energy policy. It is true that there is also potential for optimization in offshore wind energy. For example, smarter spatial and area planning can increase electricity yields from offshore wind energy by reducing shadowing effects. Close cooperation with our neighboring countries such as Denmark or the Netherlands can prevent too close development of the sea areas. In this way, offshore wind energy can develop its full potential and reduce the costs of the energy transition. New offshore wind farms in northwest Europe are not only subsidy-free, but also contribute to the costs of the infrastructure."
"The offshore wind value chain is currently facing important investment decisions for ramping up production capacities and the range of services on offer. This will create added value and jobs across Europe - including here in Germany if the framework conditions are right. Planning security for investors must therefore be at the heart of the considerations.
For the smooth expansion of offshore wind energy, the capacity of German seaports must be significantly increased. Appropriate support from the federal government - financed from the revenue from tenders for offshore wind energy - would enable the expansion of the energy ports of the future. That would be a sensible and SME-friendly addition to the Union's energy agenda," he adds.
