BWO welcomes the joint declaration by the Baltic Sea States

Thimm: The German special path makes cooperation difficult
1 October 2020

“We very much welcome the joint declaration of the Baltic Sea states on the further expansion of offshore wind energy,” comments Stefan Thimm, Managing Director of the Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore, who signed yesterday "Baltic Sea Offshore Wind Joint Declaration of Intent". This once again makes it clear that cross-border cooperation in offshore wind projects is becoming more and more important.

But for future cooperation, all countries should now lay the right foundation stone: “Almost all Baltic Sea countries have already introduced bilateral agreements for differences (CFD) or are in the process of introducing them. It would be very short-sighted in this country to choose a completely different tender design, ”warns Thimm. The German special path of a second bid component planned with the amendment to the WindSeeG will not only drive up the costs of future offshore wind projects, but will also make cross-border cooperation unnecessarily difficult. “Poland and Lithuania have understood this and are currently adapting their tender design. Germany should also use the momentum in order not to fall behind ”, said Thimm.
